Can I Live in the Home During a Whole-House Remodel?
The Honest Answer: Sometimes Yes, Sometimes No
This is one of those questions that doesn’t have a simple yes or no — it depends on the scope of work and how much of the house is being touched at once.
At Caliber Construction, we’ve done remodels where families comfortably stayed in the home the entire time, and others where it made zero sense to try. The key is planning ahead and understanding how each phase affects your living space.
When You Can Stay in the Home
If the remodel is being done in sections — like one level at a time or specific rooms — living on-site is usually possible.
Here’s when it tends to work well:
- In-kind remodels: You’re upgrading finishes (paint, flooring, trim) or replacing cabinets and fixtures that stay in the same spot.
- Partial remodels: Only part of the home is under construction, and you can close off that area from the rest of the house.
- Kitchens or bathrooms done in phases: We can often set up a temporary kitchen or alternate bathroom to keep you functioning during the job.
- Homes with separate floors or basements: One area can be fully sealed off for work while you live in the other.
In these situations, we build temporary walls, install dust protection barriers, and use air scrubbers to keep your living space clean and safe.
When It’s Better to Move Out
If the job is a full-gut remodel — meaning we’re opening walls, replacing electrical, plumbing, or HVAC — staying in the house isn’t realistic or safe.
You’ll probably need to relocate if:
- The entire interior is being renovated at once.
- Utilities (water, power, HVAC) are disconnected for extended periods.
- There’s major structural work, flooring replacement, or new drywall throughout.
- The house becomes a construction zone with limited access and heavy dust.
Trying to live through that level of work usually adds stress and can slow the project down, because everything has to be cleaned or contained daily.
How We Handle It at Caliber
We build around your life — not the other way around.
If you plan to stay in the home, we map out which areas will be usable, create clear schedules, and communicate daily so you always know what’s coming next.
If you choose to move out temporarily, we accelerate the timeline by allowing multiple trades to work simultaneously. That gets you back home faster — with fewer interruptions and better results.
My Recommendation
If you’re doing a cosmetic or partial remodel, living in the home is usually fine.
If it’s a complete renovation, relocation is the better move — it’s cleaner, faster, and safer.
The goal isn’t just to survive your remodel — it’s to enjoy it once it’s done. Sometimes stepping out for a few months lets us work at full speed and deliver the final product exactly the way you pictured it.
