What Is the Best Time of Year to Start a Whole-House Remodel?

November 12, 2025

Timing Your Remodel the Smart Way

When it comes to a whole-house remodel, there’s no “perfect” time that works for everyone — it depends on what you’re remodeling, your schedule, and even your home’s layout.

Here’s how I usually explain it: every season has its pros and cons. What matters most is planning far enough in advance so when you’re ready to start, your materials, designs, and permits are already in place. That’s the difference between a smooth remodel and one that drags for months.

Spring & Early Summer – The Most Popular Window

If you’re asking when most people start — it’s spring. The weather’s stable, daylight lasts longer, and it’s the perfect time to open up walls, replace windows, or do any exterior tie-ins without fighting the cold.

For full-house remodels, we often break ground in March through June, especially if clients want to be back in the home by the holidays.
This is also the time when
permits move faster, and material deliveries (especially cabinetry and flooring) are more predictable.

Winter – The “Hidden Gem” for Remodeling

Most people assume winter is a bad time to remodel — it’s actually one of the best-kept secrets in this business.

If you’re doing an interior-heavy remodel — kitchens, basements, full interiors, or trim and paint work — winter can be ideal. Labor availability is higher, lead times are shorter, and your project can be completely wrapped up by spring when everyone else is just starting theirs.

It’s also a great time to lock in pricing before seasonal material increases hit.

Fall – The “Pre-Holiday Push”

Fall remodels are all about timing — clients want things finished before Thanksgiving or Christmas. If your project starts in late summer, that’s realistic. But starting in October and expecting to finish before December is usually cutting it close, especially for a whole-home renovation.

Still, it’s a strong season for phase-one projects — demo, design, and rough framing — that can transition smoothly into interior finish work after New Year’s.

Summer – Great for Exterior Work and Additions

Summer gives you dry weather and full daylight — perfect for roofing, siding, decks, additions, and foundation work.
The downside? It’s the busiest time of year, and subcontractors are booked solid. If you want to start in summer, line everything up by
 late winter at the latest.

My Professional Take

The best time to start your remodel is when your plan, materials, and budget are ready.
If you call me in April with no design, you’ll likely start in June or July.
If you call me in November with drawings and approvals done, we can often start in January and have you living in your dream home by spring.

Timing is strategy — and that’s where Caliber Construction helps you win.
